July 2000
Pirates
on the Pungo
Torrential morning thunder storms threatened. However, skies cleared
by late morning and gave way to a beautiful afternoon, with sunshine
and a 14 knot breeze. A great Day for sailing! The competitors crossed
the starting line at noon. The 14 mile course was set windward/leeward.
The wind came up from the eastern shore and brought the back of
the fleet up with the front of the fleet. It proved to be an exciting
race. Congtatulations NYR!

August 1999 Pirates on the Pungo
The first ever Pirates on the Pungo Regatta featured 14 boats. With the wind coming out of the Soutwest, all boats made a clean start off Belhaven, heading South down the Pungo on the 7 mile windward leg. The wind shifted North, and the chutes popped out in spinnaker class. They were just beyond the red "4" when the wind deserted the fleet. The decision was made to shorten the course for cruising class. A good time was had by all in this classic August drifter. |
